Surrey set to lose out on a new road fund

Surrey Cabinet Member for Highways is challenging the Government over a new road fund.

John Furey has written to Andrew Jones MP, the Government’s Road Minister, after realising a new scheme funded by Vehicle Excise Duty will only apply to roads maintained by Highways England.

This covers 100 miles-worth of roads in Surrey with the remaining 3,300 miles being overseen by Surrey County Council.

Mr Furey claims Surrey’s drivers contribute £100 million in Vehicle Excise Duty every year however this fund would only see one-quarter of that figure invested in the county’s roads.
