East Surrey Hospital has been named the best dementia-friendly hospital in England at the national Dementia Care Awards.

A range of improvements for people living with the condition have been made across the hospital in recent years. An ambitious dementia strategy focussing on key areas has led to strengthened governance and better data. The hospital uses the Butterfly Scheme which ensures that patients receive the right support.  Staff have also introduced dementia leads in various areas and enlisted the support of volunteers to support activities on the wards. A dementia friendly garden has transformed part of the hospital; the Camomile Courtyard is part funded by Charity donations and provides a relaxing space away from the hospital’s buildings.

Michael Wilson, Chief Executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust paid tribute to everyone involved in delivering the improvements.
