Horley Mayor Battles Heatwave To Continue 165 Mile Trek

Last weekend, Horley Town Mayor and Vietnam veteran, Councillor David Powell, started walking the equivalent distance from Horley to the Menin Gate. 

The 84 year old is walking 165 miles in laps around the town’s recreation ground to raise money to restore the town’s Royal British Legion headquarters.  The Earl Haig Sports and Social Club suffered fire damage earlier in the summer.  Councillor Powell and three other determined walkers have set off from the Horley Recreation Ground every day at 11am and have even done so during the intense heatwave.  David carries a wreath with him each day of the trek and will ask the Mayor of Ypres, in Belgium, to lay it at the Menin Gate.
