Police warn of catalytic converter thefts

Thieves have carried out a spate of catalytic converter heists across Surrey since the start of the year.

Police have warned car owners to be on their guard after 32 thefts took place in the first 11 days of 2021.

Criminals are climbing under cars and using a rotary saw or angle grinder to remove the bolts in what officers called a “quick, noisy and dirty crime.’

Officers have published advice on how to protect your car and asked anyone who sees anything suspicious to get in touch.

Security measures such as installing lighting and CCTV around regular parking spots are all good deterrents, according to Surrey Police.

Officers also advised getting a catalytic converter security marked as well as upgrading the bolts and car alarm to increase safety.
