Crawley Borough Council has accelerated its plans to reach net zero.

Councillors unanimously voted to bring forward the borough’s targets from 2050 to 2040.

The council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan ‘Action to Zero’ was given the green light in November.

Councillor Gurinder Jhans, Cabinet member for Environmental Services and Sustainability, said, “We have already made progress in reducing our carbon emissions. This revised target will help us accelerate our response for the benefit of our community and, importantly, future generations.”

“We declared a climate emergency and this shows how seriously we take it. Our Climate Emergency Action Plan is ambitious and it is right we seek to reach net zero even quicker.”

This new target means the council will need to reduce carbon emissions from its own operations by at least 50 per cent by 2030.
