Police search for fraudsters

Police now have footage of two suspects who they believe conned a couple into giving them their bank card.

Early in May an older couple from Crawley received a call on their landline from a man who claimed to be an officer from Hammersmith Police station.

The officer told the victim they had arrested someone in London for an alleged card fraud.

The victim thought he was put through to his banks to cancel the cards and then arranged for them to be picked up by the fake police officer. He gave his pin numbers to what he believed to be his bank.

The cards were then collected by taxi and used at Ibis Hotel on Romford Road in Stratford, London.

They were used again 5 minutes later at a cash machine on Bow Road.

The two men withdrew around £350 in cash.

Police only have basic descriptions of the suspects who they say are between 18 and 25, Asian and slim.

Detective constable Glenn Fisk says this type of fraud is common nowadays and warns that banks and police will never ask for bank card pin numbers.

Unemployment in Crawley

Unemployment benefit claims in Crawley are at their lowest in six years.

That’s according to the office for National Statistics.

The Jobseekers’ Allowance claimant rate in Crawley hasn’t been this low since autumn 2008.

MP Henry Smith says he’s ‘particularly pleased to see that youth unemployment in Crawley has fallen to 2.1 per cent, which represents a fall of three quarters.’

Reigate Robbery

Three men have got away with two cash till drawers following an armed robbery at Morrison’s in Reigate.

The incident took place at around 1am on Tuesday morning after the men smashed their way through the front entrance to the shop. They were armed with crowbars and threatened staff before taking off with the cash drawers. They then drove off in a dark coloured Vauxhall Vectra towards High Street. No members of staff were injured during the incident.

Surrey police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Police All Out Day

Around 80 officers took part in Sussex Police’s ‘All Out Day’ last Friday where they swapped their usual places of work to join colleagues in more visible roles across the county.

Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney said she was delighted with the enthusiasm and energy shown by all those who joined Operation Maximum, working alongside their colleagues to execute drugs warrants, recover stolen property, assist with burglary investigations and getting out to help road policing officers keeping Sussex a safe place for drivers and other road users.
