Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 2022 decision to be made next week

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Cycle event may not return to the county after next year.

Surrey County Council will take a decision on the future of the race next week, but a report suggests councillors will decide to stop supporting the event in favour of more community-led sporting events.

Next year’s event has already been agreed to go ahead on a reduced scale, with only four miles passing through Surrey.
A consultation carried out by the council showed balanced views on the event, but revealed a large proportion of people were strongly opposed to it.

Denise Turner-Stewart, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities said:
“We are committed to encouraging cleaner, greener travel and recognise the health and well-being benefits from all kinds of sport including walking and cycling. We are actively seeking new opportunities within Surrey to encourage all sorts of people to get out and about on their bikes. The recommendations in the paper were not easy to make, and we held off making this decision until we had exhausted all available options to try to make the event work for our residents.

However, the ethos of the smaller event; focusing on inspiring the take-up of cycling by women, families, and Wheels for All, more closely aligns to the Council’s objectives to encourage cycling for everyday journeys. Although we can no longer support the larger closed road event, we remain open minded to hosting less disruptive, smaller family focused events in future years.”

Fire Chiefs ask people to respect Bonfire Night

Firefighters across Surrey and Sussex are preparing for a spate of home fireworks displays this year.

With many public events cancelled, more residents are expected to host Bonfire Night events at their own home.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue (WSFR) chiefs have reminded residents to be responsible with their events by only using official fireworks and finishing before 11pm.

WSFR Head of Prevention Nicki Peddle said:
“Whilst most people enjoy fireworks responsibly, in the wrong hands they can cause real misery. Remember that fireworks are explosives, and as such should be treated with respect and only used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the Firework Code.”

The Firework Code:

  • Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable, and ensure it finishes before 11pm
  • Only buy fireworks which carry the CE mark, keep them in a closed box and use them one at a time
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary
  • Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back
  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit
  • Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them
  • Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators
  • Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire
  • Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
