A service of remembrance was held yesterday for a boy and his grandfather who died when their car was struck by a train at a level crossing near Horsham. A minute’s silence was held at St Nicholas Church in Itchingfield and a candle was lit during yesterday’s service.
The man and his grandson were sadly pronounced dead at the scene following the crash at the Barns Green crossing on Saturday. No one on the train was injured during the crash.
Investigators from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have attended the scene.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and West Sussex County Council have taken delivery of a new aerial ladder platform.
The appliance can extend a ladder and firefighters to rescue people from blocks of flats and direct large quantities of water on to a fire from above. The state of the art aerial ladder platform cost £610,000 and will be based at Horsham Fire Station. It replaces one which has been in service for 18 years.
West Sussex has a second aerial ladder platform based in Worthing. Surrey has similar appliance at Leatherhead Fire Station which was borrowed by the London Fire Brigade to fight the Grenfell Tower fire last year.
Crawley Town beat Lincoln 3-1 at home on Saturday. Harry Kewell’s men move up to 9th place in League 2, moving to within two points of the play-offs in their fifth successive home win.
Merstham remain in 12th place in the Bostik Premier League despite losing 1-0 away to Tonbridge Angels.
In the Bostik South Division, East Grinstead won 2-1 away to Sittingbourne, and Horsham won 2-1 at home to Phoenix Sports. South Park lost 2-1 away to Walton Casuals.
It was bad news for both our local teams in the Combined Counties Premier Division. Redhill lost 3-0 away to second place Bedfont Sports, and Horley Town lost 2-0 away to Godalming Town.
Chris Quinlan spoke to Tim Bowling about Plane Justice’s part in the successful High Court action against the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Route 4 Gatwick flight path.
In 2016 the CAA decided to bring in new Sat Nav technology (rather than the previous beacon system) and changed Route 4 to a new route for a consultation period. This meant planes now flying over villages such as Newdigate, Salfords, Leigh, Horley which lead to over 12,000 complaints from local residents.
Several groups formed to try overturn the flight path changes, one of which was Plane Justice, headed by Chris Quinlan.
Route 4 decision quashed
Despite petitions and lobbying campaigns the CAA eventually decided to make Route 4 permanent. Plane Justice took them to the High Court and following a judicial review the Route 4 decision was quashed. Gatwick Airport and the CAA will now look again at the route of the flight path.
