West Sussex Fire Safety

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is reminding all business owners the importance of rigorous fire safety practices in support of UK Business Safety Week.

The Safety Week runs until Sunday. The aim is to make sure businesses and their staff have the information they need to prevent and respond to fire incidents in the workplace.

The fire service will be engaging with local businesses throughout the week to offer advice.

Business owners or employers who would like more information can email businessfiresafety@westsussex.gov.uk.

Retired Teacher Charged With Historical Abuse Offences

A retired teacher has been charged with the historical indecent assault of a boy in his charge

The 11 offences are alleged to have taken place between 1969 and 1972 at Christs Hospital School in Horsham.

The victim was aged between 11 and 14 at the time.

Peter Burr, aged 72 from Dartmouth is due to appear at Crawley Magistrates Court tomorrow (Wed 13 September).

Football Update

In League 2, Crawley Town fell to a 3-1 defeat to Colchester United on Saturday, after conceding three first half goals.

In the Bostik Premier Division, Merstham gain a point in their 2-2 draw away to Harrow Borough.  Both of Merstham’s goals were from Ryan Hall.

South Park move up to 5th place in the Bostik South League after winning 3-1 away to Ramsgate.  Horsham drew 1-1 away to Walton Casuals and East Grinstead drew 2-2 at home to Greenwich Borough.

Some of our local teams were competing in the FA Vase first qualifying round on Saturday.  Three Bridges are through to the next round after winning 2-1 away to Bedfont Sports.  Horley Town are also through, winning 4-2 away to Worthing United.  It was bad news for Redhill though who are out of the FA Vase losing 3-1 at home to Chatham Town.

Serious Car Accident in Horsham

One person has sadly died and two others were injured in a car accident near Horsham on Friday night.  

They were travelling on the A24 in a Lexus which crossed the Robin Hood roundabout before hitting a dual carriageway central reservation.  

An 85 year old passenger was taken to hospital but later died.  Another passenger was seriously injured and the driver had minor injuries.

Restaurant Fire in Horsham Town Centre

A fire broke out in a restaurant in Horsham town centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.  

The blaze at the rear of the Côte Brasserie in East Street was reported at around 3 am.  Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to the scene and the area was cordoned off.  At the height of the fire the roof was alight.  The fire was brought under control at around 7 am.  

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
