Thieves target ambulance stations

Thieves have been stealing life-saving equipment from ambulances and stations.

In what appears to be a targeted campaign, offenders have taken vital life-saving equipment including Lifepaks – manually operated defibrillators and diagnostic machines.

South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Several towns across the region, including Dorking, have been affected.

Arrests following stabbing in Tilgate

Three people have been arrested following a stabbing in Crawley.

Police were called to Tilgate Parade around half-past midnight Monday morning.

A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital with a stab wound to his chest.  The victim’s wounds are not thought to be life threatening.

Two men and a woman, all aged in their twenties, have been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent.

Disqualified lorry driver jailed after being caught speeding near Crawley

A lorry driver who was driving whilst disqualified and without insurance has been jailed.

Hughie McGonnell was caught speeding in a 44-tonne articulated lorry on the M23 near Crawley.

He was 15mph over the limit when the police stopped him.

Further checks identified McGonnel as serving a five year ban for a previous drink-driving offence.

The vehicle was seized, and McGonnell was arrested and charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty and at Crawley Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to prison for 16 weeks. He was also disqualified from driving for a further 15 months, and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Metal drum smashes cars on M23 near Gatwick

An investigation is underway after a large metal wheel drum struck a number of vehicles on the M23 near Gatwick Sunday evening.

A beige Volkswagen was the first to be hit on the southbound carriageway shortly after 5pm.  The collision caused a tyre to blow and the drum to smash through the central reservation and onto the northbound carriageway.

A black Volvo was then struck, followed by a black Audi.  The drum smashed through the windscreen causing minor injuries to the passenger.

All occupants were taken to East Surrey Hospital for treatment having been covered in glass.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Furzefield School Children Bury Time Capsule in Merstham

A time capsule was buried at the new Merstham Community Hub development last week.  

Pupils from Furzefield Primary School included in the time capsule, items such as an old and new £1 coin, a newspaper, and information about their school. The time capsule will be unearthed in 2047.  Once the hub development is complete, a plaque will be placed inside the building showing the co-ordinates of the spot where the time capsule is buried, and the date it is to be dug up.

When complete, the Merstham Community Hub will include a new library, pre-school childcare, public IT resources, and drop-in advice facilities.
