Man jailed for killing a cyclist in Horsham

A man has been jailed after knocking down and killing a cyclist in Horsham.

27 year-old Zisi Lushi was in collision with Michael Dixon in Kerves Lane back in December after losing control of the vehicle.  The 65 year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lushi had borrowed his brother’s car and was carrying fake ID after entering the country illegally.

The 27 year-old was found not guilty of death by dangerous driving but was convicted of causing death by careless driving.  He also pleaded guilty to causing death while driving without a licence and without insurance.

Lushi has been jailed for 14 months and will be deported to his home country of Albania after he has served his sentence.

Quad bikes stolen in South Godstone

Three quad bikes have been stolen from a workshop in South Godstone.

The break-in occurred between 10 o’clock Saturday evening and 9 o’clock Sunday morning.

It is believed a fork lift truck may have been used to remove the bikes from the property on Byers Lane.

The quad bikes are thought to be worth £1500.  One was white, another was red with a Ferrari emblem and the third was green with some damage to the front fenders.

House in Reigate the target of a burglary

Enquiries continue into a burglary in Reigate.

The offenders are thought to have gained entry to the property on Harrison Close by smashing the glass on the UPVC front door.

It is believed they then used cleaning products in an attempt to cover their tracks.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon shortly after 4 o’clock.

It is thought they left empty handed.

In another incident around the time of the break-in, a man was seen to be acting suspiciously.  When challenged by a member of the public a spray was used and the witness was threatened with a garden tool.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police.

New Fire Engines in Sussex

A new state of the art fire engine is now ready for operational action in West Sussex.

The high-tech Scania, which replaces the old Water Tender Ladder based at Midhurst Fire Station, is part of West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s on-going investment into upgrading its fleet.

The new appliance benefits from a Compressed Air Foam System which uses only a small amount of water to quickly and effectively suppress a wide range of fires including thatch, property, vehicle and heathland fires.

It also has a larger water tank and more powerful hose reels than its predecessor.

The new Scania is the first of three new hi-tech fire engines being introduced into West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s fleet. County fire stations at Crawley and Worthing are also set to take delivery of upgraded fire engines later this month.

New Tandridge Chairman

Tandridge District Council’s Chairman for 2015-2016 is Councillor Rose Thorn. The previous chairman, Councillor Liz Parker, presented her with the ceremonial chain of office when she was elected at the Annual Council meeting last week.

Councillor Thorn has lived in the district for 16 years and has represented the Godstone Ward since 2006. For the past year she’s been the Council’s Vice-Chairman and has served on various committees.

During her year in office, the Chairman intends to promote the role of local government throughout the district.

Her chosen charity is Ectopic and Early Pregnancy Charity, which is dedicated to providing specialised research and continuing care to people throughout the UK. She will also be supporting Steps, another small, but extremely hard working charity which helps families with babies born with Talipes (Clubfoot) and Hip Displacement.

The new Vice-Chairman of the Council, also elected at the meeting, is Councillor Pat Cannon, who represents the Chaldon Ward.
