Railway Assault

A 52 year old man from Woldingham suffered cuts and bruises in an affray on a Victoria to East Grinstead Train on January 26th.

He boarded the 9.23pm East Grinstead-bound train at Victoria, and sat in a window seat.

Another man got on the train at East Croydon and sat down next to him.

A short time later, the two men got into a verbal disagreement, which turned violent.

The attack was only halted when other passengers intervened.
British Transport Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to following the incident between 9:30 and 10pm.

Update (Sun 15 Feb) : Police have told us that a man has now come forward.

Phone scam targets elderly residents in Tandridge

Elderly residents in Tandridge are being warned of a telephone scam which has already claimed one victim.

As part of the scam someone claiming to work for Tandridge District Council phones residents offering a reduced council tax band and a refund if they pay a £59 fee.

The victims are then asked to provide their bank details.

The District Council is reminding everyone that they will never contact residents and ask for bank or other personal details.

Anyone who has been a victim of this scam should call Surrey Police on 101.

Man from Horsham behind bars for historic sexual abuse offences

A man from Horsham has been jailed for historical sexual abuse offences.

49-year-old Nigel Smith was sentenced to four-and-a-half years behind bars for offences which took place between 1995 and 2003.

Last year he was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault, one count of indecency and one count of actual bodily harm.

In December he pleaded guilty at a retrial to one count of indecent assault.

Smith has also been placed on the Violent and Sexual Offender Register for life.

Off-duty Firefighter helps to save footballer in Crawley

An off-duty firefighter from East Grinstead has helped to save a footballer’s life.

25 year-old Michael Gaunt, who plays for Forest Row, performed life-saving CPR on an opponent from Stone FC during a local league football game in Crawley.

The player from Stone FC collapsed from a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Gaunt continued CPR for 25 minutes until the paramedics arrived.

He is now set to receive a special commendation from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service in recognition of his actions.

Football Update

Crawley Town moved off the bottom of League despite another loss at Yeovil Town on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking the lead in the first half through an Izale McLeod goal, the Reds succumbed 2 -1 and remain on 27 points – 4 from safety.

And there were no wins for our local sides in the Ryman League. Redhill lost 1 – 0 at home to Whyteleafe, while South Park lost 2 – 0 at Hythe. Merstham and Herne Bay shared the points in a goalless match, East Grinstead and Ramsgate scored one apiece while Three Bridges managed 2 away goals to draw with Hastings United.
