Remembrance Sunday 2020

With restrictions currently prevailing with the Covid-19 pandemic, Susy Radio in partnership with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council recorded the Service of Remembrance which was broadcast on the 8th November and simultaneously released on both Susy Radio and the Council websites.

The Remembrance Service introduced by Neil Munday was broadcast on Susy Radio on Sunday, 8th November

We Will Remember Them

A special programme to commemorate Remembrance Sunday during the very challenging circumstances we find ourselves in.

This all came about on the 14th September this year when Neil Munday saw a message from Horley Branch of the Royal British Legion stating that this year`s parade had been cancelled due to Covid-19. He pretty much immediately rang the Mayor`s office at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council and suggested using Reigate Castle (as it could be closed off easily for a few hours and record something or broadcast live from there on the day but that depended on Covid rules at the time – wow what foresight) The council said brilliant timing we were considering videoing a program for their media we never considered working with Susy Radio on this. Neil said “we can make it happen”. So on a blustery and misty rainy type of day, Saturday 24th October Neil set up a small gazebo just inside the Castle entrance with huge thanks to the near neighbour an Ex Royal Marine and very pro what we were going to have to achieve for the power set up the recording equipment, Met a chap called Gareth from Reigate School of Ballet who was going to do a two camera shoot and produce the video with the recorded Susy Radio audio.

This was all in the can but this week the person who was going to put the programme together unfortunately found themselves unable to do so due to our own Covid regulations at the Susy studio`s and the current lockdown.

So Neil grasped hold of it once more and 28hours of music selection, clip searching through his own archive of Susy Outside Broadcasts, editing and recording later is hoping that his work is appreciated due to the gravitas that the Act of Remembrance carries.

Neil admits “It`s not the same as being there in person, following a parade or for myself playing in the Redhill Corps of Drums and Band and marching through the streets of Horley with the streets lined with people to memorial gardens for the service of Remembrance. People will rightly be upset but the fallen gave there todays for our tomorrows, we are giving our liberties for our tomorrows and that of our children. That’s a small price to pay compared to the war years. That’s why it is important to do it this way”.

“WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”

The programme is a journey of music and reflection with clips from previous acts of remembrance that Susy radio has recorded from live broadcast plus spoken word and choral tracks.

You will hear some fantastic pieces of music from Neil`s own collection including:

Vaughn Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves
The Central Band of the RAF The Battle of Britain

RAF March Past

Evening Hymn and Sunset
Edward Elgar Nimrod (From the Enigma Variations)
The Regimental Band of the Pipes and Drums
William Blake (lyrics), Hubert Parry (music) Jerusalem
Dame Vera Lynn We`ll meet again
White Cliffs of Dover
Robert Laurence Binyon (Excerpt for the poem “For the Fallen”) or known as “The Exaltation”
John Maxwell Edmonds Kohima Epitaph
Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae In Flanders Fields

Many pieces performed by the Royal Philamonic Orchestra or the London Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

With thanks to the many Susy Radio contributors from previous Acts of remembrance recorded during live broadcast and Susy presenters who have made contributions.

Excerpt from Robert Laurence Binyon`s Poem “For the Fallen”

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Huge thanks to the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Cllr Rosmary Absolom and her staff and guests.

Due to Covid-19, many volunteers are unable to help at this year’s Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion need your help to distribute poppies to your friends and neighbours and ensure that they can continue to support our Armed Forces community.

Susy Radio receives ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion Award’

The ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion’ scheme was launched in July as Members of Parliament across the Susy Radio area stood up for local people and businesses.

It has just been announced that Susy Radio has received a ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion Award’ for continuing to provide information and support during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The letter and certificate are displayed with kind permission from Henry Smith, Member of Parliament for Crawley.

Remember your pets and stay safe this November

Public displays may have been cancelled this year, but Surrey Police expect there may still be private fireworks displays at home.

They are asking residents to follow safety advice and act sensibly as bonfire and fireworks night approaches. Remember, ‘HANDS. FACE. SPACE’. Full guidelines for England effective from 5th November can be viewed at the government website.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, adopting alternative celebrations and sticking to the guidelines in place can go a huge way to ensuring everyone remains safe.

Unfortunately our pets and other wildlife don’t enjoy the bright lights and loud noises as much as we do, and so Surrey Police recommend the following guidelines to keep your pets calm during firework season:

Dogs and Cats

  • Close windows and curtains and put on music or the television to muffle the sound of fireworks. Create hiding places or ‘dens’ around your home where your pet can feel safe and comfortable.
  • Praise your pet for calm behaviour, and don’t try to force them out of hiding places. You could also try to desensitise them at home by playing firework noises at a low level, rewarding them for calm behaviour, and building gradually up to normal noise level.
  • Walk dogs during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off, and make sure your pets are microchipped, so if they get spooked and escape outside they can be traced back to you.
  • Horses

  • If you think households close to where your horses (or livestock) are stabled might be setting off fireworks privately, consider contacting them to make them aware that animals will be in the field, and ask that the fireworks are set off later in the evening, as far away from your land as possible.
  • Keep your horse in a familiar routine and environment to help them feel secure. If your horse is usually stabled then keep them stabled. If they are normally out in the field, keep them there as long as it is safe, secure and not near the fireworks display area.

Plans for Crematorium and Memorial Garden to be Built in Woodhatch

Plans have been announced for a new crematorium and memorial garden to be built in Woodhatch.

Currently, three in four people who pass away in the Reigate and Banstead Borough opt for cremation, meaning their loved ones must travel to a facility outside of the area, usually to Leatherhead, Crawley or Croydon.

The plans for the crematorium show a modern and discreet building, set in a landscaped garden of remembrance that complements the surrounding landscape.

The Council is planning an online consultation event on Thursday 29 October at 6.30pm via Zoom. Residents will hear from the Design Team about the proposed development and will be able ask questions.

Susy Radio celebrates ‘Local Radio Day’

As in previous years, Susy Radio joined many other local radio stations from all over the country in support of ‘Local Radio Day’. held on Monday, 12th October

This year, ‘Communities making waves: turning the tide on isolation’ was the theme for the day.

This year in particular, the need to unite during isolation and join supportive networks has really highlighted just how important local radio is, both for reliable information and as a source of great entertainment.

With local news, traffic bulletins and information, local events and details of various support hubs for coronavirus, local radio has been crucial for many in their local communities during 2020, and Susy Radio has endeavoured to play its part for our community.

The day began with Susy’s Jim Richman hosting a ‘Local Radio Day’ Breakfast which was followed by a special programme live from the station outside broadcast unit with Neil Munday based at ‘Blue Lizard Signs‘ in Crawley, and featuring special guests Henry Smith, Member of Parliament for Crawley, Cllr Peter Lamb, Leader of Crawley Borough Council and Steve Sawyer, Executive Director of Manor Royal Business District, Crawley.
This was held in a strictly controlled ‘Covid friendly’ environment given the current situation in which we find ourselves.

Ellie P took over the reigns from Neil with her programme for ‘Local Radio Day’ which also featured some of the messages which listeners had been invited to send to the station requesting ‘shout outs’ and thanks to friends and family in the area, and Geoff Rogers continued to celebrate ‘Local Radio Day’ following on from Ellie.

Here are some of your voice messages received during Local Radio Day and played by Ellie P. Thank you for all your emails and texts as well.
