The current amber cold health alert has been extended until 10AM on 09/01/2026 across the South East. The amber alert has a matrix score of 12. This means: Forecast weather is likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services, including:

• a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. We may also see impacts on younger age groups
• a likely increase in demand for health services
• temperatures inside places like hospitals, care homes, and clinics dropping below the levels recommended for assessing health risks
• challenges keeping indoor temperatures at the recommended 18°C leading to more risk to vulnerable people
• staffing issues due to external factors (such as travel delays)
• other sectors starting to observe impacts (such as transport and energy)

Cold weather can affect your health. The people most likely to be affected are the elderly, the very young, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.

If you know or look after someone that may be susceptible to the effects of this cold weather period please help make sure that they stay warm and well, and if possible check in advance that they are prepared for this cold spell.

Work will begin this month to give three children’s play areas a makeover. 

The play areas at South Park in Reigate, Beecholme Recreation Ground in Banstead, and Hogden Bottom in Kingswood will all receive new equipment and landscaping. 

Hogden Bottom will be the first of the three sites to be upgraded with works due to start this week. 

A start date for South Park will be agreed in the next few weeks and this will see a new mini trim trail and inclusive features such as a swing, spinners and a multi-activity sensory panel. 

Sussex Police are investigating a report of a teenage girl having been accosted by a man in Crawley on Monday (15 December).

A 15-year-old girl reported being pushed over by a man in an alleyway between Caburn Heights and Hambleton Hill at around 5.40pm.

He attempted to grab her phone, but the victim was able to fight him off before he fled the scene towards Ditchling Hill.

The victim described the suspect as an Indian/Asian man, in his 20s/30s and around 5’11” tall, wearing dark clothing.

An investigation is underway and anyone with information is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 1016 of 15/12.
