My first experiences in the world of entertainment, was back in the dawn of time (the 80s), although not on radio but television. My husband’s profession took us to the Middle East and looking for something to do, I somehow managed to persuade the executives at Qatar Television to hire me and days later found myself in the studio as main presenter and assistant producer on the popular teatime television magazine programme. “Good Evening Gulf”, broadcasting live, five nights a week, to the gulf state and sometimes beyond. Lacking any formal training and given the strict cultural differences, live television was indeed a baptism of fire but a great learning experience. Amongst other things I presented the weather, which was somewhat predictable!
On my return to the UK, I was interviewed by BBC Radio Merseyside about my experiences living and working in Qatar. I saw the inner workings of a radio station and I was hooked.
I added ‘Work in Radio’ to my bucket list at that point. However, bringing up our young family and other commitments then consumed me, so my ambition had to be put on the back burner for a while.
It wasn’t until 2012 that an article about my local community station appeared in the paper which caught my attention. Shortly after I began my training with Uckfield FM. With their support and kindness, I quickly progressed and found myself behind the microphone, regularly presenting daytime shows.
I have since worked for many radio stations and over the years been fortunate to meet and interview some really lovely people from the community, plus the odd celebrity or two. Giving people and organisations the opportunity to share their story is always a pleasure, often unpredictable but never boring.
I often wonder what I get out of sitting alone in the studio talking to heaven knows who – hopefully someone! It is hard to answer that question; I am sure all radio presenters ask themselves the same. For me, it is always a special time. I enjoy planning my show, the buzz of being in the studio and the challenge of putting something together that hopefully people will enjoy. I genuinely challenge myself to brighten up the day of those tuning in and I never forget what a privilege it is to have someone choose to invite me into their day.
Aside from radio, I volunteer at my local theatre as a sound technician and cinema technician. I am also an enthusiastic and ever hopeful member of my local art group.
Married to Chris for over forty years (I was a child bride!), we have two children and five grandchildren.
