Help to Stop Smoking with Crawley Wellbeing

Crawley Borough Council is encouraging residents who smoke to make a quit attempt this Stoptober, with free local support available through Crawley Wellbeing.

Latest Office for National Statistics data estimates that 18.2 per cent of adults in Crawley were current smokers during 2020 to 2024, highlighting the continued importance of helping local people to quit.

Stoptober is back, calling on the 4.4 million people in England who still smoke to join millions of others who have successfully quit with the campaign.

Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, and quitting is one of the best things residents can do for their health. The good news is that if residents stop smoking for 28 days, they are five times more likely to quit for good.

In Crawley, residents don’t have to quit alone. Crawley Wellbeing provides free, friendly stop smoking support, helping people find the right approach for them. The service offers one-to-one behavioural support and access to quit aids, including nicotine replacement therapy and vapes.

Crawley Wellbeing has supported more than 900 residents on their stop smoking journey and is on track to reach 1,000 by the middle of 2027. Around one in two people supported successfully become smoke-free.

I wouldn’t have done this on my own without knowing you were on the end of the phone if I needed you. Having that support made a real difference and helped me stick with it. I’m so pleased I quit and would encourage anyone thinking about stopping smoking to give it a go.

Quitting smoking can be difficult, but nobody in Crawley has to do it alone. It’s fantastic to see the difference Crawley Wellbeing is making, with so many local residents already successfully quitting. Stoptober is a great opportunity to take that first step, and whether you’re trying for the first time or giving it another go, free local support is here to help.

Councillor Michael Jones

Leader of Crawley Borough Council

My husband and I gave up smoking around 15 years ago. Between us we were smoking up to 60 cigarettes a day, so the cost was a big motivation to stop. It was one of the best decisions we made, both for our health and our finances, and I would encourage anyone thinking about quitting this Stoptober to give it a go and make use of the free support available.

Councillor Marion Ayling

Mayor of Crawley

If a previous attempt didn’t go to plan, Stoptober is a great opportunity to give quitting it another go. Quitting can also benefit family and friends protecting them from second-hand smoke while leaving more money for the things that matter.
