Sussex Police Supports National Firearm Amnesty

Sussex Police is joining other forces in the country in a four-week Firearms Amnesty for five types of BRUNI-manufactured side or top venting blank firers or TVBFs.  Tests by the National Crime Agency and policing have shown some BRUNI models are readily convertible and are therefore illegal.

The amnesty will take place from today until 27th February. 

During the amnesty, those handing in this type of firearm will not face prosecution for illegal possession and will not have to give their details, although its history will be checked for evidence of use in crime. 

People can hand in the specified blank firers over the counter at designated police stations including Caterham which is open daily, and Crawley Police station which is open from Monday to Saturday.  

Anyone unable to travel to one of these locations can call the police on 101 to request it be picked up from their home. 

Anyone wishing to take part in the amnesty has been urged to use common sense when transporting their TVBF to one of the chosen stations – by placing them in a labelled bag or box and making their way straight there. 

The full list of police stations which are accepting the Top/Side Venting Blank Firers as part of the amnesty are as follows:

Popular Tree Giveaways Return to Surrey Libraries

Over 750 free trees will be handed to residents this week with the return of tree giveaway events to Surrey libraries. 

Surrey County Council’s tree strategy launched in 2019 with a pledge to facilitate the planting of 1.2 million trees by 2030; that’s one for every resident in Surrey.  The trees are native, broad-leaved species and come with a stake and a guard, ready for planting at home. 

Seven libraries in the county are giving the trees away on a first come first served basis this Saturday 7th February.  In East Surrey, the tree events are at Redhill Library and Banstead Library from 9.00 am, finishing at 12.00 midday or earlier if the trees have all been collected.

Rock The Roof, St Nicholas, Charlwood

St Nicholas Church in Charlwood, is roughly 940-950 years old with its oldest parts, including the tower base and north wall, dating to around 1080. Built shortly after the Norman Conquest, it is a Grade 1 listed building featuring 13th century wall paintings and with a roof that needs repair.

Rev. Sue Lepp explained the church is seeking grant funding and events like Rock The Roof are massively appreciated; not only to raise the much needed funds but also to have good community fun, singing and some magic from the very talented Tim. Rock Choir members from across the SUSY area and beyond, gave up their time for free with a packed church joining in!

SUSY Sunday Brunch’s Clive Hilton went along to find out more and briefly spoke to Natasha Graimes (Rock Choir Lead) and Tim Hill (Magician & compere) before listening to their brilliant version of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’.

Gatwick Route 4 Airspace Change Consultation

Gatwick Airport is consulting on an Airspace Change Proposal (ACP) to reintroduce satellite-based navigation procedures on one of its nine departure routes, known as Route 4. 

The other eight departure routes already use this technology.  Planes flying on Route 4 take off to the west, before turning 180 degrees northwards, and then heading east in the vicinity of South Holmwood, Leigh, Redhill and Reigate before flying on towards their destination. 

The public consultation on the four shortlisted options for the future operation of Route 4 opened last Tuesday and will run until 28th April.  The first consultation event has been arranged for the afternoon of Thursday 12th February at the Reigate Manor Hotel.
