Free Music Events Throughout the Summer in Crawley

Crawley Borough Council is delighted to announce a series of free music events to be held on the High Street this summer – starting in mid-June. The news was announced by Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Crawley Borough Council at the Full Council meeting last night (25 March).

The music will be on every Thursday evening, between 5pm and 8pm and will be free to attend. It will showcase local talent, as well as other national acts.

High Street ‘Summer Sounds’ is all about our significant investment in supporting our town centre and encouraging more people to spend time on our historic high street. These free events will help create a lively atmosphere, support local businesses, bars and restaurants and make Crawley a welcoming and entertaining place to visit throughout the summer, as well as help support our night-time economy. I’m thrilled the council is supporting making such great activities happen, here in our town centre and I hope everyone has a great time!

Critical Incident Declared at East Surrey Hospital

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust have declared a Critical Incident due to the continued high levels of Norovirus across East Surrey Hospital and the significant levels of sustained demand on emergency care services.

The current situation has been exacerbated in recent days by a rise in staff sickness and challenges discharging patients and moving patients around the site in line with increased infection control measures.

Members of the public can help the Trust ensure care is available for those with the most urgent and serious care needs by seeking help from the most appropriate health services for their health condition:

  • People should continue to use pharmacies, GP practices, walk-in centres, the NHS App and NHS 111 online or by phone 24/7 for urgent health advice
  • People should only use 999 and ED for serious or life-threatening conditions or medical emergencies (when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk).
  • Unfortunately, we may need to reschedule some non-urgent appointments to accommodate those patients with the most urgent clinical need. People should however continue to attend appointments unless they are contacted by the Trust to reschedule. Cancer and our other most urgent operations will continue to be prioritised.
  • If you have a loved one who is ready to be discharged from hospital we would be very grateful for your support in enabling that discharge as quickly and safely as possible.

In addition, the Trust has put in place temporary visiting restrictions to all its wards at East Surrey Hospital until further notice, with the exception of patients on end of life care, in maternity and paediatric wards, and in ED. This will help to reduce the risk of further spread and support the safe care of its patient.

Anyone coming to the site must follow additional infection control measures to help reduce the spread of Norovirus – including practicing good hand-hygiene, reducing their movement around the site, and wearing masks affected in clinical areas.  You can find out more here.

Dr Ed Cetti, Chief Medical Officer for Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said:

“In response to the continued high levels of Norovirus across our hospital, sustained demand in our Emergency Department, and the challenges we are facing moving patients around the site in line with necessary infection control measures, the Trust has declared a Critical Incident.

“Temporary visiting restrictions to all our wards at East Surrey Hospital therefore remain in place until further notice, with the exception of patients on end of life care, in our maternity and paediatric wards, and in ED. This will help to reduce the risk of further spread and support patient safety.

“In line with our strengthened infection prevention measures, we continue to ask members of the public not to come to the hospital if they have had diarrhoea or vomiting in the last 48 hours.

“We know how important visiting is and we are keeping these measures under close review and will lift them as soon as we are able to. More information on visiting and local urgent care options is available on our website.”

Ancient Priors in Crawley to be Given New Lease of Life

Repair and restoration work to Ancient Priors in the High Street will begin next month as part of Crawley Borough Council’s ongoing commitment to protecting and investing in the town’s historic centre.

The project is scheduled to commence on 13 April and is expected to take around five months to complete. The timing reflects the need to use specialist heritage materials, including lime mortar, which require suitable spring weather conditions.

During the works, key historic features of the Grade Two listed building will be carefully repaired and restored. This includes the medieval oak timbers, Horsham stone roof and traditional lath and plaster walls, all of which will be repaired and redecorated using appropriate conservation techniques.

Ancient Priors dates back to the 15th century and is one of Crawley’s most historically significant buildings. Once complete, the works will ensure the long-term preservation of the property while maintaining its prominent position on the High Street.

The restoration and conservation project will cost approximately £260,000 and forms part of the council’s wider programme of investment in Crawley’s historic High Street, supporting its character, heritage and long-term vitality.

Ancient Priors is one of the most important historic buildings in the High Street and a key part of our town’s heritage. This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to protecting the High Street, preserving its character and ensuring that important, historic buildings are maintained for future generations. By caring for landmarks like this, we are supporting a High Street that remains distinctive, welcoming and rooted in Crawley’s history.  I know that Ancient Priors is a much-loved landmark for many of our longer standing residents who will be pleased to know its future is being protected for future generations.

Mental Health: Are You Okay? The Question That Saves Lives

Sunday Brunch featured soundbytes from the above ‘Sussex & Surrey Soapbox’ podcast episode…. to skip chapters click on the 3 horizontal lines (left in the above player). Have your say via WhatsApp (bottom right) or join the conversation in our Facebook Group HERE.

One in four adults will face a mental health problem each year across the SUSY area, but numbers don’t capture the quiet part: the loneliness, the slow slide, and the moment someone realises they’re not coping. From the Red Lion & Cellar Room in Betchworth, Surrey, we talk plainly about mental health in Sussex & Surrey and why it’s showing up more in everyday life, workplaces, and friendships.

Maureen Jones, a psychotherapeutic counsellor, shares what she’s seeing more of: anxiety, depression, isolation after Covid, and that undercurrent of not belonging. We dig into early warning signs many people miss, like broken sleep, irritability, comfort eating, zoning out, and feeling emotionally numb. We also come back to one simple habit that can cut through all the awkwardness: asking “Are you okay?” and meaning it.

Our special guest Graham Dearing from Menshare Listening Group tells his story, from pushing through school and building a high-pressure finance career to hitting a point where “buckle down and work harder” stopped working. He talks candidly about imposter syndrome, unrealistic roles, trying different medications and therapies, and why empathy and confidentiality in peer groups can be the support that finally lands. We also discuss barriers to workplace help, concerns about privacy, and the bigger picture around crisis care, including NHS plans for mental health A&E and the need for proper follow-up and long-term talking therapy.

If you’re looking for support, we point to Menshare Listening Group and Sistershare across the area, and Maureen wraps up by sharing practical guidance on finding properly qualified private counselling through the Counselling Directory.

Roundtable Featuring: Graham Dearing (Menshare Listening Group), Maureen Jones, Georgie Lucas, Iqbal Khan, Aga Es & James Tidy. Host: Clive Hilton.
