YMCA East Surrey: SleepEasy Event

Local charity, YMCA East Surrey held it’s sixth annual SleepEasy fundraising event on Saturday night at the Merstham Community Hub.

Forty two people volunteered to sleep rough for one night to raise money and awareness for young local people who find themselves homeless.  YMCA East Surrey runs Hillbrook House in Redhill which provides safe and affordable accommodation and support for young people in housing need. Money raised will help get young homeless people back on their feet and sustain employment. The event is also designed to raise awareness of what some vulnerable members of society have to endure.

Dogs To Be Kept On Leads At Tilgate Lake

Crawley Borough Council has asked dog walkers to keep their pets on leads around Tilgate Lake.

This follows several dog attacks on wildlife by the lake, one of which resulted in the death of a cygnet.  Other incidents include dogs chasing a deer which resulted in the deer dying of a heart attack.

A consultation with dog walkers and visitors to Tilgate Park showed that whilst two thirds of dog walkers were against dogs on leads, almost all non-dog walkers wanted dogs on leads.

Redhill Anti Social Behaviour Regulation

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council has reported a reduction in anti-social behaviour in Redhill town centre.

This follows the implementation four months ago of the Council’s first Public Space Protection Order.  The Order gives the Council and police additional powers to tackle anti social behaviour in Redhill by prohibiting certain activities.  Distinctive blue and white signs list the behaviours which include acting in an anti social manner, harassing, or being verbally abusive.

The Council introduced the PSPO in October to an area covering the pedestrianised shopping centre, Memorial Park, Marketfield Way and some surrounding streets.
