Sussex Police Run To Remember

A team of Sussex Police officers and staff members are now 14 days into their pledge to run, jog or walk at least two miles a day for the next 100 days.

The pledge, which started on Saturday, 20 February, is in support of ‘Run to Remember’, a national event run by the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial fund.

This is a registered charity which was set up in memory of PC Hughes, who was murdered alongside her colleague PC Fiona Bone, on 12 September 2012 in Greater Manchester.

Team Sussex first took part in the event in 2013/14 and raised more than £4,000 in donations – they hope to beat this record this year.

Bryn Hughes, Nicola’s father, set up the charity to provide learning opportunities and pre-employment skills in the form of support through grants or services to children (under 21) who have suffered a tragic loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.

Secondary School Choice in Surrey

Five out of six Surrey pupils have been offered their first choice secondary school.

Figures from Surrey County Council also show that the number of secondary school applications topped 11,000 for the first time.

A total of 11,132 Surrey pupils applied for places for September 2016 – an increase of more than 200 on last year.

With 96% of Surrey secondary schools now rated good or outstanding by Ofsted, the figures highlight the growing demand for secondary education in the county.

Linda Kemeny, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Educational Achievement, said that she was pleased with the outcome.

She pointed out that increased demand for places is not being matched by extra funding from the Government leaving the council with a £30 million shortfall.
