Infection-Detecting Bandages Trial Begins

A smart bandage which changes colour when it detects infections, is being trialled at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

The technology has potential to detect infection earlier, allowing improved treatment for burns patients.  The trial will see swabs and dressings taken from hundreds of patients to be used in laboratory tests to see how sensitive the bandages are to infections.  The colour changing bandage will also prevent unnecessary tests in patients who do not have an infection.

The Queen Victoria Hospital is one of four hospitals conducting the clinical trials.  The technology was developed at the University of Bath and is funded by the Medical Research Council.
