Army to drive local ambulances

The army is to drive ambulances for South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb)

Members of the Royal Logistics Corp will begin in a few days working from bases in Gatwick and Polgate.

It will begin with 36 personnel which will be scaled back or increased depending on need.

Joe Garcia, the trust’s executive director of operations, said it had been “exploring ways in which we can bolster our frontline response to patients during these difficult times,” with firefighters also due to be deployed as drivers.

It comes as firefighters are also due to be deployed as ambulance drivers to help bolster frontline services.
