Relative Found Following Unveiling of Horley’s First Blue Plaque

A family member has been found of the Telegraphist honoured by Horley’s first Blue Plaque. 

On 17th May 1900, Ada Coates received and passed on the vital message during the Boer War that ‘Makefing had been relieved’.  The Plaque to commemorate the event was unveiled last week on the site of the Old Post Office in Yattendon Road, but the Horley Local History Society had been unable to find any of Ada’s living relatives to attend the ceremony. 

By coincidence local resident, Sandra Crittell, heard the Susy Radio news bulletin about the Plaque and recognised the name Ada Coates as her Great Aunt.  Sandra spoke to Neil Munday about the moment she first learnt that her relative had been honoured with a Blue Plaque:
