Where to have a good bonfire night!

Remember Remember the 5th of November

As we come up to the annual celebrations of bonfire night, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of Parliament in 1605, a series of organised events are being put on around the county.

Although this is normally celebrated on the 5th November, most displays this year will take place on Saturday 6th.

To ensure that you and your family get the most out of this year’s event, make sure you visit this page for the most up to date information.

Appeal for Reigate landlords to house refugees

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is appealing to private landlords with vacant, or soon-to-be vacant, two, three or four-bedroom family homes for rent in the borough, to come forward to help them find much-needed homes for Afghan refugee families.

In August, the Council pledged to accommodate and support three refugee families who assisted our British forces and had to flee their homes in Afghanistan. It has been working closely with local partners and the voluntary sector, however, as yet, has been unsuccessful in securing suitable homes for these families to start their new life in the borough.

Cllr Caroline Neame, Executive Member for Housing and Support, said: “These Afghan families put themselves at risk to help our UK Armed Forces and now it’s our turn to help them to start a new life in our community in safety.

“We are urgently looking for properties for three families. Although we had an initial flurry of offers when we announced we would be taking part in the Government’s relocation scheme, unfortunately none of these have come to fruition or proved suitable.

“So, if you have a two, three and four bedroom self-contained property in good lettable condition in the borough and that ideally has good transport links, please contact us. In return the Council will offer a package to landlords which includes rent in advance plus a deposit, funded by the Government. Experienced council staff will support landlords and tenants through the process of resettlement, provide ongoing support for the tenancy and help them find employment through our existing Refugee Support service.

“We are not using properties intended for local families in housing need to rehouse refugees, which is why we are making this wider appeal to private landlords that can assist this small cohort.”

Potential landlords are being asked to contact the council here: www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/contact_us.

The Council is extending its support as part of the Government’s Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme, a bespoke resettlement scheme for current and former locally employed staff in Afghanistan. The scheme offers priority relocation to the UK to any current or former locally employed staff who are assessed to be under serious threat to life. Further information can be found on the Government fact sheet – ARAP scheme.

The Council’s commitment to resettling refugee families goes beyond providing a place to live. The Refugee Support team work with a range of partners and voluntary group to help with registering with health services, getting children into local schools, language support, money management, community integration, and finding volunteering and work opportunities.

The Council has previously successfully helped 20 Syrian refugee families resettle in the area through a partnership with Tandridge District Council and Mole Valley District Council, through the Government’s 2015 resettlement scheme. The families have made a significant contribution to community life in Surrey since being resettled.

Good budget for Surrey, but devil is in the detail

Tim Oliver, Surrey’s council leader, says he is initially pleased with this week’s budget but adds ‘the devil is in the detail’.

In a statement Mr Oliver welcomed the government’s steps to ensure local funding increases and says areas like Surrey must receive a share which enables them to level up within the county.

He highlighted social care being an issue where the council faces higher costs and unmet demand due to recent changes:

Commenting on yesterday’s Budget and Spending Review, Surrey County Council Leader, Cllr Tim Oliver said: “We in Surrey were pleased to see the Chancellor take steps to ensure local government funding increases, with the news of a £4.8bn boost to grant funding over the next three years. I’d like to personally commend Secretary of State and local Surrey MP Michael Gove for working so closely with the Chancellor to secure the desperately needed resources for councils. Of course, the devil is in the detail and we need to know how this money will be allocated. We must ensure that areas like Surrey receive shares that enable us to level up within as well as between parts of the UK.

“This is especially true in areas like social care, where Surrey County Council faces higher costs and unmet demand in years ahead due to the recently announced measures around the health and social care levy, new rights of private funders to council’s reduced rates, and the statutory changes to eligibility of children’s care. We must work together to find not only a lasting solution to the issue of sustainable funding for social care, but also how we attract and reward the workforce to ensure the high standard of care our residents expect.

“As we did in the run up to the Budget and Spending Review where we put forward a strong case for additional resources to address the financial pressures facing the County, we will now be working closely with government ahead of the Local Government Finance Settlement at the end of this year to understand and engage on how funding is to be shared out. This will ensure Surrey residents can continue to rely on the excellent services we at SCC are able to provide and to respond to changing needs over the coming years.”

On-demand buses could be coming to Surrey

Surrey could be getting an on-demand bus service.

Plans being drawn up by the council would see users request departure or arrival times using an app which then groups passengers into a convenient journey time.

It’s hoped it will lead to reduced fares and encourage more people to uses buses.

The council has until the end of the month to send its plans to the Department of Transport and if given the go-ahead it will be trialled in Mole Valley and Tandridge as well as Waverley and Guildford.
