The Rising Cost of Smoking

New data has been revealed into the cost for residents who smoke in Surrey.

Research undertaken by the charity Action on Smoking and Health, showed that the average smoker is spending just under £2,000 a year on tobacco.

The findings also show a link between smoking and disadvantage, with nearly 26% of smoking households living in poverty.

Surrey County Council’s Public Health team is providing a free stop smoking service, which provides expert advice to help residents quit.

So far over the past year, 68% of clients who had quit at 4 weeks managed to go on to achieve 12 weeks without smoking.

Crawley Gets Smooth

Night-time work to reconstruct and resurface roads in and around Crawley get underway next week.

The scheme, which is estimated to cost £3.5 million will see around 6km of carriageway resurfaced in the works.

75% of the materials used will come from sustainable sources, including 10% recycled construction product. Advances in design also mean the new surfaces will be quieter and have reduced spray.

Signed diversion routes will be in place for each site.

The affected roads are:

  • A2220 between Cheals roundabout and Bewbush roundabout
  • A2011 between Tushmore roundabout and Northgate (Hazelwick) roundabout
  • A2011 Northgate roundabout
  • A2011 westbound carriageway between M23 and Northgate roundabout

The works will be carried out at night-time only under a full road closure, running from 8pm to 6am each day, in order to minimise the impact on road users. Signed diversion routes will be in place for each site. Roads will reopen for daytime traffic on a temporary road surface. Road speeds will be restricted to 30mph until the final surface has been laid.

Have Your Say on dog control

Crawley Borough Council wants to hear your views on introducing a Public Spaces Protection Order, which would prohibit dog-related anti-social behaviour in Tilgate Park.

The council intends to introduce the order, requiring all dogs to be on a lead in the park, with no dogs allowed in the children’s playground, Walled Garden or Tilgate Nature Centre.

Anyone however with an assistance dog, would be exempt.

Visit the council’s consultation page crawley.gov.uk/consultation to let them know your thoughts.

The closing date for the consultation is Friday 25th March.
