Surrey Signage Fine

A court case relevant to many small traders across the county was dealt with by Reigate magistrates last week.

In a case brought by Surrey County Council, Michael Jones, a butcher from Woking, pleaded guilty to placing illegal signs on Highways Land and failing to remove them despite repeated warnings and requests from the council.

He was fined £2,000 plus costs of £1,540.

Surrey County Council maintained that the signs were illegal and could pose obstructions and in some cases a danger to the public, as well as distracting drivers.

Stolen Property Recovered

A large haul of stolen items recovered following the arrest of a man in Surrey is believed to include a number of items taken in burglaries in Crawley and East Grinstead.

Some of the items have been identified as stolen in a house burglary in Crawley between July 6 and 23.

Police believe that there may be other Sussex links to the property and are keen to reunite the items with their owners.

Surrey Police raided an address in Stanwell and found a selection of watches, a collectible whistle, an engraved lighter, a harmonica and commemorative coins.

Absconded Prisoner Found

Albert Stanley, an escaped prisoner with connections in Sussex and Surrey has been found by police at an address in Worthing.

Stanley, who absconded from jail in South Gloucestershire,
had been serving a life sentence for a murder committed in East Sussex in 1980

Living and Ageing Well

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Living and Ageing Well Week launches on 29 September and is set to offer even more than last year’s inaugural Ageing Well Week.

The week offers a packed programme of over 50 different activities across all the council’s leisure and community centres.

It includes films, various sports, dancing and even learning French.

At the heart of the week will be National Older People’s Day on Wednesday 1 October, celebrating the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society.

Electric Bike Theft

An electric bicycle’s been stolen from a house in Highams Hill, Crawley.

The bike was taken between 7 and 8am last Wednesday (17 Sep).

It’s quite distinctive and folds up so it can be taken on a train.

The bike was stolen from a disabled man who needs it to remain mobile.
