Police Target Modern Slavery Offences In East Surrey

A week of action between police and partner agencies has targeted modern slavery offences across East Surrey.

The work began with Operation Memory, a multi agency operation which was carried out last week at an address in Shipley Bridge near Horley.  The focus was whether exploitation through slavery, poor living conditions, or low wages was taking place. Several arrests were made and the investigation is ongoing.

Other work has included licensing checks at various premises in East Surrey including car washes, takeaways and farms.

The week was part of a national project led by the National Crime Agency to tackle modern slavery and human trafficking.

They had received reports of possible fights breaking out in the town. The dispersal order was authorised for 48 hours covering the area of the town centre, including Oxted School, the railway station, Master Park, and playing fields near to Mill Lane in Hurst Green. 19-year old Jack Tickner from Oxted was charged with six counts of possession of an offensive weapon, and one count for possession of cannabis.

He has been released on bail and will appear before Guildford Crown Court on 15th June. Tickner is not allowed to be in Master Park or Bluehouse Lane during this time.

Pitch Improvement Work At Crawley Town FC’s Checkatrade Stadium

Work began at the weekend on Crawley Town Football Club’s biggest pitch improvement project in the Club’s 21 year history.

Contractors Premier Pitches moved in on Friday to start renovation works at the Checkatrade Stadium just after completing a project at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium earlier last week.  The Checkatrade Stadium will be hosting Brighton and Hove Albion women’s matches next season; as part of that commitment, Brighton have made a considerable financial donation to the renovation.

Due to the scale of the work involved, the Reds will be unable to stage a pre-season game until the end of July.
