World Mental Health Day – Annie profiles The Lucy Rayner Foundation

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year.

This year’s theme is young people and mental health in a changing world.

Lucy Rayner passed away on 5 May 2012 after fighting a silent battle with depression. A little while ago, Susy presenter Annie Whitmore spoke to her father Stuart Rayner about The Lucy Rayner Foundation, a charity he set up with his partner Jenny.

After hearing Annie’s interview with Stuart Rayner, Susy listener Tom Longley was inspired to run the Reigate Half Marathon in memory of Lucy.

He said: “I was very moved by Annie’s interview with Lucy’s father on her Wednesday show. I had heard of the charity before but didn’t know very much about it. The interview revealed how events that took place were both so ordinary and subsequently so traumatic for this family.

Sharing this and bringing it to peoples’ attention has got to be a good thing for other families and sufferers of depression and Annie and Lucy’s father did this in a gentle and compassionate way. I ran unofficially in aid of the foundation and donated the proceeds to the charity.”
