Carbon Cuts Save £10 million for NHS Trust

The Trust which runs Crawley Hospital has saved £10,000,000 in ten years thanks to a successful sustainability programme.

The Care Without Carbon initiative saved Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust the equivalent of employing another 390 nurses.

Carbon released by the Trust’s 70 buildings was reduced by 42% by buying renewable energy and using computer software to control essential equipment such as ventilation and heating.  Low emission vehicles and electric bikes have reduced emissions from the Trust’s fleet of vehicles, and a successful campaign has encouraged staff to walk, cycle or take public transport to work.

The team is now working on the next Care Without Carbon strategy to take them to 2025.  This will include a 51% carbon reduction target and an ambition to meet net zero carbon by 2040.
