Gatwick to continue with second runway plans

Gatwick Airport is going ahead with plans to use its emergency runway for routine flights.

Under the plans, the standby runway – which is currently used as a taxiway or when the main runway is closed – would be used for departures of smaller planes.

The airport hopes to have the converted runway completed by 2029.

Local campaigners call the plans ‘despicable’ after concerns  over noise, congestion and air quality were raised.
