The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge In Lingfield

One of the main fundraisers for this year’s BBC Children in Need appeal travelled through the Tandridge district on Saturday evening.

The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge arrived in the wind and rain in Lingfield as the day’s journey ended at the Lingfield and Dormansland Centre.  Matt Baker from the One Show was accompanied by six young riders as they greeted the crowds who gathered in the village. The team continued their journey early yesterday, travelling on through Smallfield and Horley.  

Their progress will be broadcast on The One Show throughout the week.

Beacons Of Light In Reigate Priory Park and Tilgate Park

Local residents gathered in Reigate’s Priory Park yesterday as part of of a nationwide Beacons of Light event to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

The beacon in Priory Park was lit at the event last night to symbolise the ‘Light of Hope’ that emerged from the darkness of war, and in commemoration and remembrance of the end of the conflict.  A beacon was also lit at Tilgate Park in Crawley. They both joined a total of 1,300 beacons which were lit throughout the UK at 7 pm. Afterwards, at 7.05 pm church bells tolled in East Surrey and North Sussex joining those nationwide ‘Ringing Out for Peace’, as they did 100 years ago when news of the Armistice spread.

Football Update

Crawley Town will face League One Southend in a replay at the Broadfield Stadium after a late own goal by John White kept Gabriele Cioffi’s side in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday.  The replay will take place on 20th November.

Merstham are out of the FA Trophy after losing 2-0 away to Salisbury.  It’s good news for Horsham who secure a place in the next round after beating higher division side, Potters Bar.

Three Bridges are through to the third round of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup after beating Shoreham 1-0 away on Friday.

In local league matches, South Park are bottom of the table in the Bostik South Central Division, losing 3-0 away to FC Romania on Saturday.  East Grinstead Town lost their Bostik South East match 2-1 at home to Ashford United.

In the Combined Counties Premier Division Horley Town lost 2-1 at home to Abbey Rangers.  Redhill’s away match with Badshot Lea was postponed due to too much surface water on the pitch.

Oxted gasholder to be demolished in New Year

Work to demolish the gasholder in Oxted will begin in the New Year.

St William Homes LLP is gathering site surveys and ground investigations ahead of the works, which are due to begin in January.

This follows the decision of the High Court to refuse a judicial review into the Council’s decision to grant permission for new housing to be built.

The development comprising of 111 one, two and three-bedroom apartments, with landscaping and car parking, will be on the grounds of the gasholder and Johnsdale car park.
