Fire Chiefs ask people to respect Bonfire Night

Firefighters across Surrey and Sussex are preparing for a spate of home fireworks displays this year.

With many public events cancelled, more residents are expected to host Bonfire Night events at their own home.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue (WSFR) chiefs have reminded residents to be responsible with their events by only using official fireworks and finishing before 11pm.

WSFR Head of Prevention Nicki Peddle said:
“Whilst most people enjoy fireworks responsibly, in the wrong hands they can cause real misery. Remember that fireworks are explosives, and as such should be treated with respect and only used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the Firework Code.”

The Firework Code:

  • Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable, and ensure it finishes before 11pm
  • Only buy fireworks which carry the CE mark, keep them in a closed box and use them one at a time
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary
  • Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back
  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit
  • Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them
  • Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators
  • Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire
  • Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

Plans have been announced for a new crematorium and memorial garden to be built in Woodhatch.

Currently, three in four people who pass away in the Reigate and Banstead Borough opt for cremation, meaning their loved ones must travel to a facility outside of the area, usually to Leatherhead, Crawley or Croydon.

The plans for the crematorium show a modern and discreet building, set in a landscaped garden of remembrance that complements the surrounding landscape.

The Council is planning an online consultation event on Thursday 29 October at 6.30pm via Zoom. Residents will hear from the Design Team about the proposed development and will be able ask questions.

Caterham on the Hill’s Library to be Redeveloped

There are plans to redevelop Caterham on the Hill’s library into a new community space.  This will include a new library, Family Centre and accommodation for care leavers.

A report to Surrey County Council’s Cabinet is due to be discussed at the next meeting next Tuesday.  The process will be co-designed by The Council with residents, staff and local stakeholders.

The Family Centre will offer targeted services for children aged 0 to 11 and will act as a hub for services such as health visiting.

The redevelopment will also address the urgent need for suitable quality care leavers’ accommodation within Surrey.  This will give better support for local young people rather than placing them out of the county.

UK Oil and Gas pulls out of Holmwood

UK Oil and Gas has given up its licence to drill at Holmwood in Surrey.

The announcement has been welcomed by campaigners who have been against the proposed site near Leith Hill beauty spot.

In a statement the energy company said after a study they’ve found the area to be ‘neither technically viable or economically feasible.’

UK Oil and Gas will continue working at Horse Hill near Horley.
