First female Jumbo Jet pilot retires at Gatwick

The UK’s first female Jumbo Jet pilot has retired at Gatwick.

64-year-old grandmother Yvonne Kershaw landed her last flight into the airport from Cancun yesterday.

She started flying the iconic plane in 1993 after learning in a small aircraft when she was 19.

More than 2,000 flights later, she says she’ll miss the role ‘enormously,’ saying the crew had become part of her extended family.

Armed Police in 5-hour stand-off in Crawley

Armed Police were involved in a 5-hour stand-off in Crawley yesterday.

They were called to a house in Selsey Road just before 1 pm, after a man locked inside made threats to hurt himself and officers.

No arrests were made after trained negotiators managed to resolve the incident, which resulted in two air rifles being thrown from the property.

Horley campaign against Uber

A campaign against Uber operating in Horley has been launched after drivers for the company are accused of using a car park as a toilet and littering.

50 spaces in the High Street car park were given to the taxi firm in October last year, but residents say they’ve had problems with mess and noise ever since.

‘Horley says Uber Out’ was set up 61-year-old Peter von Staerck who says a campaign strategy is being worked out.

Uber says it takes the accusations very seriously and is working with the Council on appropriate action.

British Airways apologies after more IT problems

British Airways has apologised for delays at Gatwick yesterday, caused by a temporary problem with its check-in system.

Passengers faced long queues and had to be checked in manually after the 20-minute computer failure.

The IT issues also affected Heathrow and come 2 months after a similar incident at the airline caused 75,000 people to be stranded at airports around the world.
