Football Update

Photo shows Dorking Wanderers celebrating promotion to the Ryman Premier Division.  

Dorking Wanderers have been promoted to the Ryman Premier Division.  They beat Corinthian Casuals in their Ryman South play off final on Saturday.  With a goalless draw after extra time, Dorking won 5-4 on penalties.

Crawley Town’s penultimate game of the League 2 campaign ended in a 2-0 defeat to play off hopefuls Cambridge, on Saturday.  The Reds finished with ten men when Josh Payne was shown a straight red for bringing down Gerry McDonagh in the build up to the second goal.

Merstham travel to Woking tomorrow for the Surrey FA Senior Cup Final.  Kick off is at 7.45 pm and you can hear live commentary of the match on Susy Radio with the Back of the Net Team.

Sunshine Sevens Rugby Comes to East Grinstead

Fans of Rugby Sevens flocked to East Grinstead at the weekend to support their teams in a tournament.

It was the 60th anniversary of the Sunshine Sevens at East Grinstead RFC which saw ladies, community clubs, elite men and junior teams compete over two days.

Not only is the Sunshine Sevens an RFU qualifying event, it is also the longest running Charity Rugby Sevens Tournament in the UK, this year raising funds for Step by Step School for Autism, Special Families East Grinstead and Wooden Spoon.

Susy Radio’s Natalie Osborne went along to the tournament and had a chat with England Sevens Captain and winner of an Olympic Silver Medal with Team GB in Rio, Tom Mitchel:

Football Update

 

In League 2, Crawley Town move up to 19th place after a 3-3 draw at home to Carlisle United on Saturday.  Captain, Jimmy Smith scored the equaliser in stoppage time.  The Reds have two league games left to play this season.

It was the last game of the season on Saturday in the Ryman Premier Division; Merstham finish in 14th place after losing 2-1 away to Burgess Hill.

In the Ryman South, South Park end the season in 8th place after beating Sittingbourne 2-0 at home.  Horsham lost 1-0 at home to Hythe Town and East Grinstead Town lost 3-1 away to Carshalton Athletic.  Three Bridges lost 4-2 to Walton Casuals and will be relegated next season; this was a home match for Three Bridges but was played at Merstham after their pitch was vandalised recently.

In the Combined Counties Premier Division, Horley Town won 4-0 away to Raynes Park Vale.  In the Combined Counties Division One, Redhill beat Bagshot 6-1 at Kiln Brow and after ending the season in second place, will be promoted next season.  The Lobsters now turn their attention to the Division One Cup final against AC London.

60th Sunshine Seven Rugby Tournament in East Grinstead this weekend

This weekend sees the 60th anniversary of the Sunshine Sevens Rugby Tournament in East Grinstead.

Believed to be the longest running 7s competition in England, teams from across the South compete for the ‘Lady Astor of Hever Trophy’ while raising money for local charities.

It also features ladies teams, with the last year’s winners the Norwegian Ladies returning to defend their title.
