Police appeal following series of catalytic converter thefts

Three men used an electric saw to steal catalytic converters from cars in a daylight raid in Epsom.

The trio struck at around 11am on Monday in the Sainsbury’s car park. A member of the public who attempted to intervene was threatened with a metal pole.

Police described the suspects as white, in their mid-thirties and of stocky build. They arrived and left the scene in a dark grey Honda CR-V.
A Surrey Police spokesman said:
“The car park was busy at the time of the incident and we believe that there will be multiple witnesses. If you saw anything suspicious, or recognise the car and suspects described, please contact us quoting PR/45200097499.”

  • West Sussex Firefighters raise over £6,000 by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats

West Sussex Firefighters have raised more than £6,000 by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The foursome completed the route in 10 days to raise money for the Kids Cancer Charity and The Firefighter’s Charity.

After arriving at the tip of Scotland at the end of their 1,050 mile trip the team celebrated with a dip in the sea.

Burgess Hill Watch Manager Shaun Challis said:
“I can’t tell you how incredible it felt to finally see that fingerpost at the finish line in John O’Groats on Monday. After ten days on the road, we were all absolutely exhausted by the end of it.

“But it has been an incredible journey, and the support we have had along the way has been phenomenal. People stopped us to give us donations towards our fundraising, and at one of our overnight stops we even managed to win a tenner during a hotly contested game of pool!

“We set ourselves the ambitious target of £5,000, and we couldn’t believe how quickly the donations were adding up – we are lucky to have received so much support, and watching the total mount up as we progressed up through the country really drove us onwards – even when it was wet and miserable.”

He and firefighter Scott Cairncross cycled the full route, while firefighters Matt Firmager and Martin Belford each cycled half the distance and drove the support van.

Work on Horsham’s trial cycleway has started on Albion Way just north of the Sainsbury’s roundabout and will end at Madeira Avenue.

It’s one of seven pop-up cycleways for West Sussex which is being funded by the Government. The aim is to create a safe space for active travel and encourage people to cycle rather than use the car.

The schemes will be closely monitored covering congestion, safety and air quality.

Horley’s Mayor, Councillor David Powell has just completed a five week walk, trekking laps of the town’s recreation ground in Brighton Road.

The 85-year-old walked the equivalent of 165 miles, which is the same as the distance from Horley to the Menin Gate in Belgium.

Councillor Powell was inspired by the efforts of Captain Tom Moore, and wanted to make the journey to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s headquarters in Albert Road, after it was gutted by fire in May.
