Woodhatch Crematorium Planning Application Submitted

Image courtesy Reigate & Banstead Borough Council: Revised site boundary plan

A planning application for a new crematorium and memorial garden in Woodhatch has been submitted by the Council.

A pre-application consultation was held in the Autumn for feedback on the plans.  Over 300 responses were received, and over 130 people attended an online question and answer event with the design team.  This resulted in some changes to the proposed scheme including reviewing the hours of operation, reducing the site boundary to maintain access for recreation, and changing the building layout and construction materials to soften its appearance.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council is making the application because residents who wish their loved ones to be cremated, currently have to travel to a facility out of the borough; usually to Leatherhead, Crawley or Croydon.

For more detail on the Council’s proposal, including responses to questions received through the consultation, visit the Proposal to provide a local crematorium pages.

Police warn residents after rise in Covid-19 vaccine scam

An elderly Surrey man with dementia was targeted by fraudsters claiming to be involved in the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

Only the arrival of his carer stopped the criminals who were among those currently carrying out a spate of similar scams in the county and across the country.

The gangs send emails and texts, or make phone calls and in some cases visit victims houses claiming to be involved with the vaccine rollout. Those targeted are directed to official looking websites and asked for personal details before being promised someone will attend to administer the vaccine. They then sell the details or use them to steal money.

Real NHS officials will never ask for bank details or arrive unannounced.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Walker said:
“Preying on vulnerable people is completely unacceptable – and it’s even more callous when we’re facing the tough challenge of being isolated from our loved ones during a pandemic. Please check in with your elderly or vulnerable neighbours and loved ones – offer your support and keep an eye on who is visiting their homes. They might not be aware of these scams, so if you can talk to them and give them our prevention advice, it could make a world of difference.”

Better Health – Every Mind Matters

COVID-19 has impacted the whole country; for almost everyone, life has had to change fundamentally. Research shows that since the start of the pandemic there has been an increase in a range of mental health conditions for adults, from low wellbeing, sleep problems and anxiety to depression.

But there are things that people can do to support their mental health and wellbeing at this time.

On 18 January Public Health England launched the “Better Health – Every Mind Matters” campaign to support the nation’s mental wellbeing with the encouragement that “When things aren’t so good out there, make inside better”.

As part of the campaign, a free NHS-approved ‘Mind Plan’ has been developed. Over 2.6million people have already created one of these personalised plans that provide practical steps they can take to help manage the current external pressures on their mental health and wellbeing.

A lost dog found wandering around on her own in Merstham will be reunited with her owner…..in Scotland!

NHS Manager, Claire Hartshorn, was driving home from work last week when the dog ran out in front of her car.  After knocking on some doors with no luck, Claire took her to an out of hours vets in Cheam.  They scanned the microchip to find the lurcher is called Queenie and the owner lives in Scotland.  The owner was very emotional and overjoyed to receive the good news and said that Queenie had been missing for a month.  They now have the task of trying to collect her from Surrey.

It’s still a mystery how Queenie came to be in Merstham.

Lockdown Rules Reminder For Surrey Residents

Advertising message boards have been touring Surrey’s popular parks reminding residents to follow lockdown rules.

The vans tour the county’s popular locations focusing on areas which have recently seen a high number of visitors as Covid rates continue to rise.

The Local Resilience Forum is using the vans to remind people they are only permitted to mix alone with one other member of another household outside, and only for exercise.

Surrey now has one of the highest infection rates in the UK. The infection rate across the county increased by 46 % over the fortnight covering Christmas and New Year.
