Susy Radio receives ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion Award’

The ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion’ scheme was launched in July as Members of Parliament across the Susy Radio area stood up for local people and businesses.

It has just been announced that Susy Radio has received a ‘Crawley Coronavirus Community Champion Award’ for continuing to provide information and support during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The letter and certificate are displayed with kind permission from Henry Smith, Member of Parliament for Crawley.

Remember your pets and stay safe this November

Public displays may have been cancelled this year, but Surrey Police expect there may still be private fireworks displays at home.

They are asking residents to follow safety advice and act sensibly as bonfire and fireworks night approaches. Remember, ‘HANDS. FACE. SPACE’. Full guidelines for England effective from 5th November can be viewed at the government website.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, adopting alternative celebrations and sticking to the guidelines in place can go a huge way to ensuring everyone remains safe.

Unfortunately our pets and other wildlife don’t enjoy the bright lights and loud noises as much as we do, and so Surrey Police recommend the following guidelines to keep your pets calm during firework season:

Dogs and Cats

  • Close windows and curtains and put on music or the television to muffle the sound of fireworks. Create hiding places or ‘dens’ around your home where your pet can feel safe and comfortable.
  • Praise your pet for calm behaviour, and don’t try to force them out of hiding places. You could also try to desensitise them at home by playing firework noises at a low level, rewarding them for calm behaviour, and building gradually up to normal noise level.
  • Walk dogs during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off, and make sure your pets are microchipped, so if they get spooked and escape outside they can be traced back to you.
  • Horses

  • If you think households close to where your horses (or livestock) are stabled might be setting off fireworks privately, consider contacting them to make them aware that animals will be in the field, and ask that the fireworks are set off later in the evening, as far away from your land as possible.
  • Keep your horse in a familiar routine and environment to help them feel secure. If your horse is usually stabled then keep them stabled. If they are normally out in the field, keep them there as long as it is safe, secure and not near the fireworks display area.

Plans for Crematorium and Memorial Garden to be Built in Woodhatch

Plans have been announced for a new crematorium and memorial garden to be built in Woodhatch.

Currently, three in four people who pass away in the Reigate and Banstead Borough opt for cremation, meaning their loved ones must travel to a facility outside of the area, usually to Leatherhead, Crawley or Croydon.

The plans for the crematorium show a modern and discreet building, set in a landscaped garden of remembrance that complements the surrounding landscape.

The Council is planning an online consultation event on Thursday 29 October at 6.30pm via Zoom. Residents will hear from the Design Team about the proposed development and will be able ask questions.

Susy Radio celebrates ‘Local Radio Day’

As in previous years, Susy Radio joined many other local radio stations from all over the country in support of ‘Local Radio Day’. held on Monday, 12th October

This year, ‘Communities making waves: turning the tide on isolation’ was the theme for the day.

This year in particular, the need to unite during isolation and join supportive networks has really highlighted just how important local radio is, both for reliable information and as a source of great entertainment.

With local news, traffic bulletins and information, local events and details of various support hubs for coronavirus, local radio has been crucial for many in their local communities during 2020, and Susy Radio has endeavoured to play its part for our community.

The day began with Susy’s Jim Richman hosting a ‘Local Radio Day’ Breakfast which was followed by a special programme live from the station outside broadcast unit with Neil Munday based at ‘Blue Lizard Signs‘ in Crawley, and featuring special guests Henry Smith, Member of Parliament for Crawley, Cllr Peter Lamb, Leader of Crawley Borough Council and Steve Sawyer, Executive Director of Manor Royal Business District, Crawley.
This was held in a strictly controlled ‘Covid friendly’ environment given the current situation in which we find ourselves.

Ellie P took over the reigns from Neil with her programme for ‘Local Radio Day’ which also featured some of the messages which listeners had been invited to send to the station requesting ‘shout outs’ and thanks to friends and family in the area, and Geoff Rogers continued to celebrate ‘Local Radio Day’ following on from Ellie.

Here are some of your voice messages received during Local Radio Day and played by Ellie P. Thank you for all your emails and texts as well.

Crawley’s Alice In Wonderland Mosaic Gets A New Home

A piece of Crawley’s history is back on display in the town centre.

The Queen’s mosaic was originally situated in Queens Square, and depicts chess boards and a scene from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It was removed from the Square in the 1990s and has now been restored and installed in Memorial Gardens in the new play area.

The Queen’s mosaic was built in the 1950s by master mosaic fixer Len Baker from Carter Tiles.  Mr Baker’s daughter, Jeannie Smith, has been to see the mosaic in its new home.
