Pirate Radio memories – winding back 53 years

Friday, 14th August marked the 53rd anniversary of the passing of the ‘MEBO’ Act 53 in 1967 which effectively closed the UK Offshore Radio Stations.

With music from the 1960s in general and August 1967 in particular, host Geoff Rogers takes a more personal look at this sad and momentous day. First aired on Susy Radio 103.4 on Friday 14th August 2020 from 2pm to 4pm

Horley Mayor Battles Heatwave To Continue 165 Mile Trek

Last weekend, Horley Town Mayor and Vietnam veteran, Councillor David Powell, started walking the equivalent distance from Horley to the Menin Gate. 

The 84 year old is walking 165 miles in laps around the town’s recreation ground to raise money to restore the town’s Royal British Legion headquarters.  The Earl Haig Sports and Social Club suffered fire damage earlier in the summer.  Councillor Powell and three other determined walkers have set off from the Horley Recreation Ground every day at 11am and have even done so during the intense heatwave.  David carries a wreath with him each day of the trek and will ask the Mayor of Ypres, in Belgium, to lay it at the Menin Gate. 

It was suggested to David that he is is Horley’s version of Sir Captain Tom Moore:

 

Surrey marks VJ Day 75th Anniversary

Saturday 15 August 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan), the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end.

Surrey is marking the event, and full informaton can be found on the Surrey County Council website.

The following events are taking place:

Saturday 15 August 2020

  • Guildford – Service of Commemoration. Castle to be lit red, white and blue.
  • Leatherhead – Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving

    Sunday 16 August 2020

  • Guildford Cathedral – Service of Memorial. 09:45am Live and to be broadcast on the Cathedral social media channels. More information about how to view can be found on the Guildford Cathedral website.
  • There will be a two minute silence at 11am to remember those who sacrificed so much for us all.

    Have Your Say On Crawley’s Walking And Cycling Plan

    Crawley residents are being asked for their views on a walking and cycling plan for Crawley. 

    Crawley Borough Council has published a draft plan for cycle routes and invites residents to complete a short survey.  The proposed cycle network comprises 16 routes with initial ideas for improvements and estimated costs.

    A link to the survey for Crawley’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan can be found here:  crawley.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2020-08/Local_Cycling_and_Walking_Infrastructure_Plan.pdf . 

    The deadline for completing the survey is 14th September.
